Dating marlin 336
I was cleaning my Marlin 336 30-30 today and I got to wondering when I bought it.I bought it new at a K-MART store many, many years ago. Then I thought about the Marlin forum on the fire here. So using your formula, with a serial number of 231176**, my date of manufacture would have been 1977? Marlin 336 family of rifles :1948 -1968 a one or two letter code in serial #1969 - 1972 the first two digits in the serial # = the year manufactured1973 - ?It would be difficult to access a value for your rifle.I can generally say that the value will range in price from 400-1,200 dollars. The rifle was manufactured by Marlin with slight modification of their Model 336 there a few cosmetic differences in particular the sites. Your serial number indicates that your Marlin model 1893 lever action 30-30Win caliber rifle was made in the year 1904.
It was an instant hit and remains so today, especially with folks conscious about meat preservation.I would have no issue with buying another or recommending them to anyone else to purchase, everyone needs a few lever action Marlins in the gun case.I have given one to all my family members as this is my favorite rifle.1969-1972 only the first two numerals of the Serial# indicate actual year (69, 70, 71, 72) of production...
1973-2000 this is where someone would subtract the first two digits (which range from 27 to 00) from 2000 to get year of production... the first two digits (99, 98, 97 and so on) subtracted from 100 will give the 20xx date of manufacture... Disassembly instructions, company history, production date, original purchaser? If you are looking for general information then books at the library, or e Bay are available.
This date code is different than the one already listed, as Marlin rimfire rifles (other than the model 39 series) did not have a serial numbers until required to by Law after 1968. serial # 191797** there are no other markings on the rifle Also reading these posts, there are no markings on, near, around, or underneath the lever I would assume the date code would be the but it doesn't fit with what others have posted.subtract 19 from 100 = 81 so 1981. The Glenfield model is the same as any regular Marlin 336 but was made for a chain store, used hard wood instead of Walnut and may have had different sights.
